The 3rd International Workshop on Large Scale Turbulence in Open Channel Flows

The 3rd International Workshop on Large Scale Turbulence in Open Channel Flows will be held in Chongqing, China, from September 21 to 23, 2026, jointly hosted by Chongqing Jiaotong University and China Agricultural University.

The workshop was initiated by Professor Vladimir Nikora of the University of Aberdeen. Following successful editions in Aberdeen, UK (2024) and at the Politecnico di Torino, Italy (2025), it has become a premier annual forum for leading scholars worldwide to present cutting-edge findings on open-channel turbulence and its engineering applications.

Open-channel turbulence is a fundamental problem in hydraulic engineering, river dynamics, and environmental fluid mechanics. Large-scale turbulent motions govern flow resistance, momentum exchange, sediment transport, mass diffusion, and near-bed processes, and are essential to understanding complex flow phenomena in natural rivers and artificial channels.

This workshop focuses on large-scale turbulent motions in open-channel flows, together with the underlying fundamental theories, experimental observations, and numerical simulation methods. It aims to bring together researchers in hydraulic engineering, river dynamics, environmental fluid mechanics, engineering hydraulics, and related interdisciplinary fields to share recent advances and discuss future research directions.

 

Topics

The workshop will cover, but will not be limited to, the following topics:

large-scale turbulent motions in open-channel flows;

boundary-layer processes and near-bed turbulence;

bed resistance and flow resistance mechanisms;

flow dynamics under complex boundary conditions;

experimental observation and measurement techniques for complex flows;

numerical simulation of open-channel turbulence;

interactions among turbulence, sediment transport, pollutant transport, and ecological processes in river systems.

 

Invited Experts

The workshop has invited internationally renowned experts including Professor Ivan Marusic (University of Melbourne) and Professor Vladimir Nikora (University of Aberdeen) to attend and deliver plenary lectures, for in-depth discussions on fundamental research and engineering applications of open-channel turbulence.

Preliminary Program

The workshop is scheduled for three days.

On the morning of September 21, the opening ceremony and keynote lectures will be held, followed by invited presentations. The afternoon session will continue with thematic academic presentations and discussions, followed by a conference dinner in the evening.

On September 22, thematic presentations and academic discussions will continue. A workshop discussion session will also be arranged to exchange views on key scientific issues, technical methods, and potential future collaboration in the study of large-scale turbulence in open-channel flows.

An academic field trip is planned for the morning of September 23.

  1. Baiheliang Underwater Museum

    Baiheliang is a rock outcrop in Fuling District,Chongqing, that parallels the flow of the Yangtze River. In the past, Baiheliang served as an ancient device for measuring water levels of the Yangtze in China, the equivalent of a hydrometric station. The horizontal rock ledge, 1.6 km long and ten to fifteen metres wide, lay submerged under water most of the year, showing its upper face above water only during the low-water season of winter and early spring. The eyes of fish carved on the stone indicate the lowest water levels of the Yangtze River, which made the site a precious hydrographic marker. Baiheliang has been submerged to a depth of over 30 metres behind the Three Gorges Dam.

    By constructing an underwater preservation project, the Baiheliang inscription site has been wholly enclosed within a protective shell filled with clear water, allowing visitors to view it from an underwater gallery. It has thus become the world’s first underwater museum where cultural relics can be viewed in situ without diving.

  2. Longmenhao Old Street

    Longmenhao Old Street is located on the south side of Dongshuimen Yangtze River Bridge along Nanbin Road. Built along the hillside, it bears witness to Chongqing’s port-opening history. Covering an area of about 27 mu, it comprises 24 buildings, including such historic structures as the former villas or consular residences of the United States, Italy, and Belgium. Taken together, the area forms a traditional historic district that integrates cultural elements associated with Chongqing’s port-opening period, the Republican era, and the War of Resistance.

  3. Landscape of the Two Rivers and Four Banks in Chongqing

    Chongqing’s “Two Rivers and Four Banks” refers to the confluence of the Yangtze River and the Jialing River, together with the waterfront areas naturally defined by these two rivers. It is the city’s most representative riverside scenic belt, showcasing the distinctive urban character of Chongqing, where mountainous topography, the meeting of two great rivers, cross-river bridges, and a modern skyline complement one another. Landmark sites include Hongyadong, Raffles City Chongqing, the Chongqing Grand Theatre, and Qiansimen Bridge.

第三届明渠大尺度湍流国际研讨会会议通知

第三届明渠大尺度湍流国际研讨会拟于2026年9月21日至22日在中国重庆举办。会议由重庆交通大学、中国农业大学和国际知名水力学专家Vladimir Nikora教授共同主办,会议主题聚焦明渠水流中的大尺度湍流结构及其相关基础理论、实验观测和数值模拟方法。

明渠湍流是水利工程、河流动力学、环境流体力学、工程水力学、河流治理、泥沙输移、污染物扩散和生态水力过程研究中的基础性科学问题。大尺度湍流结构直接影响水流阻力、动量交换、泥沙输移、物质扩散及河床边界过程,是理解天然河流和人工渠道中复杂流动现象的重要切入点。

本次会议面向水利工程、河流动力学、环境流体力学、工程水力学及相关交叉学科领域,旨在为国内外学者搭建高水平学术交流平台,围绕明渠大尺度湍流研究中的前沿科学问题、实验观测技术、数值模拟方法和未来合作方向开展深入研讨。
