The First International Forum on River Ecological Protection and Sustainable Shipping Development was Successfully Held in Chongqing Jiaotong University

On December 11, "The First International Forum on River Ecological Protection and Sustainable Shipping Development" was successfully held in the multifunctional hall of the second teaching building in Nanan campus of our university. This international forum is jointly sponsored and organized by Chongqing Jiaotong University, Changjiang Waterway Bureau, Tianjin Research Institute For Water Transport Engineering.M.O.T. and other units. It is undertaken by National Engineering Research Center for Inland Waterway Regulation, National Engineering Laboratory of Port Hydraulic Construction Technology, Collaborative Innovation Center of Changjiang Shipping Engineering and Intelligent Waterway Technology Jointly Built by The Province and the Ministry, Chongqing Hydraulic Society, etc. The forum adopted the "Online + offline" mode, and synchronous live broadcast of the whole network, the issues covered river water ecology, water environment assessment and management and ecological waterway management theory and technology, etc. The conference invited well-known experts at home and abroad to deliver thematic reports, and gathered a large number of experts and scholars in related fields to exchange and discuss the major progress and prospects of river ecological protection and sustainable shipping development in recent years. More than 300 experts, scholars and graduate students from more than 10 universities and research institutes, including Tianjin University, Tongji University, Hohai University, Sichuan University and our university, participated in the conference offline, and more than 100 scholars and students participated in the conference online.

The opening ceremony of the conference was presided over by Professor Yang Shengfa, dean of the College of River and Ocean Engineering. Vice President Wang Pingyi delivered a welcome speech on behalf of Chongqing Jiaotong University. Zhang Huaqing, vice dean of Tianjin Research Institute For Water Transport Engineering,M.O.T., and Liu Huaihan, secretary-general of Expert Committee of Changjiang Waterway Bureau, delivered speeches respectively on behalf of the organizer.

During the invited presentations, Chen Qiuwen, a researcher from Nanjing Hydraulic Research Institute, delivered an academic report entitled " Influence Mechanism and Regulation Technology of Cascade Hydropower Development on Material Circulation and Fish Habitat". Chen Qiuwen focused on the influence mechanism and regulation technology of cascade hydropower development on material circulation and fish habitat. Besides, he pointed out that the construction of cascade reservoirs in the Lancang River intercepted silicon ions, but promoted the transformation and transport of nitrogen and phosphorus forms, improving the growth of algae downstream and changing the community structure of algae, which was beneficial to the primary productivity of the downstream river.

Professor Virender K. Sharma, a professor of Texas A&M University and an internationally renowned environmental expert, gave a report on "Ferrate Treatment in Purification of Water: Disinfection, Coagulation, and Oxidation". Professor Virender K. Sharma comprehensively introduced the latest research results on the application of hexavalent iron in water purification. Starting from the preparation of new ferrate and its application in water treatment, he mentioned that ferrate as a green oxidant has strong oxidation ability and it can be used to pretreat micro-pollutants in water supply treatment without producing bromate and other disinfection by-products, providing important research data and remediation ideas for water environmental assessment and treatment.

Professor Jiang Mingjing, Tianjin University, gave a report on "New Approaches to Research on Three-Deep Rock and Soil Mechanics". Starting from the research background of three-deep (deep earth, deep sea, and deep space) rock and soil mechanics,   According to the scientific nature of multi-field, multi-scale and multi-phase of "three-deep" rock and soil mechanics, Professor Jiang Mingjing respectively expounded the discrete element method of soil mechanics towards the macroscopic, the microscopic constitutive behavior of the "three-deep" soil, the mechanism of the "three-deep" rock and soil difficult and key mechanical problems, and the macroscopic constitutive model and development based on the microscopic mechanism.

Researcher Chao Xiaobo, University of Mississippi, USA, made a report on "The Application of Mathematical Models in Water Quality Management and Ecological Protection", introducing in detail the research and application of CCHE water flow, sediment, water quality and pollutant transport models. He found that the use of the CCHE model to simulate water quality pollution has profound significance for further innovation in the research direction of water quality numerical simulation.

Professor Li Weiying, Tongji University, made a wonderful report on “Research on Quality Assurance Technology of High-quality Drinking Water”. Combined with a large number of practical cases and domestic and foreign scientific research, Professor Li Weiying vividly explained the microbiological safety of water quality in water supply system, biological risk control and building biological security strategy for end water quality and other aspects to deeply explained the research results of high-quality drinking water security technology.

Professor Zhang Jisheng from Hohai University made a wonderful report on “Experimental Research on Scour Characteristics of Tripod Pile Foundation in Tidal Energy Engineering”. Through a series of data and pictures, Professor Zhang introduced the experimental results of the scour of tripod pile foundation of horizontal axis tidal turbine under unidirectional and reciprocating flows, discussed the main influencing factor of the scour of pile foundation, and analysed the variation characteristics of scour depth and the shape of scour pit around tripod pile foundation, which provides scientific basis for erosion protection of tripod pile foundation in tidal energy engineering.

Yang Zhongyong, associate professor of China Three Gorges University, gave a report on “Unsteady Flow Characteristics of Channel between Two Dams under the Background of Cascade Power Station Peak Regulation”. According to professor Yang Zhongyong's research, there is a significant phenomenon of high frequency eigen wave in the fluctuation of discharge level between two dams. At the same time, the amplitude, period and the amplitude and wavelength of standing wave of flood wave flow level between the two dams are explained, and the propagation and superposition of standing wave of the three Gorges dam and Gezhouba dam are explained.

Liao Jinsong, general manager of Chongqing Shipping Construction and Development Co., LTD., delivered a wonderful report entitled "Give Full Play to the Role of Waterway as a Great Channel to Promote the Green Development of Water Transport". General manager Liao Jinsong introduced the economic, energy-saving and emission reduction benefits brought by the Yangtze River hubs such as navigation and electricity hub in Jialing River Caojie and Wujiang Baima. In order to promote the green development of waterway, Manager Liao put forward four suggestions: channel greening, channel intelligence, channel infrastructure and channel centralized control.

Li Zhe, a researcher from Chongqing Branch of University of Chinese Academy of Science, made a wonderful report on “Research on Reservoir Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Its Implications for Hydropower "Dual Carbon" Strategy”. Researcher Li Zhe first introduced the current research progress of greenhouse gas detection and analysis in the Three Gorges reservoir, indicating that the Three Gorges reservoir does not have the conditions to produce high greenhouse gas emissions. Then, a detailed discussion is made on the research progress of carbon footprint during the life cycle of large and medium-sized hydropower projects in China, and it is confirmed that China's hydropower energy has significant characteristics of clean property.

Professor Yang Zhonghua of Wuhan University has made a wonderful report on “Theoretical Research and Application of Ecological Shoal Fixation”. Starting from the national strategic level of the Yangtze river economic belt, focused on the protection of large sandy river island, Professor Yang Zhonghua proposed the The equivalent Manning formula during the study of mechanism of vegetation blocking water, and studied the vertical distribution of suspended sediment concentration and sediment carrying capacity of submerged vegetation sediment carrying flow.

Jin Zhongwu, a professor senior engineer from Changjiang River Scientiffic Research Institute, made a wonderful report on “Study on the Supply and Demand Dilemma and Countermeasures of Sand and Gravel Resources in the Development process of The Yangtze River Economic Belt”. Jin Zhongwu reported from five aspects: the basic situation of promoting the development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt, the situation and changing trend of sand inflow in the Yangtze River basin, the scale and permission of sand mining in the main and tributaries of the Yangtze River, the dilemma the causes analysis of sand resource supply and demand, and analysis of and countermeasures, etc.

Associate professor wang li from Chongqing Jiaotong University has made a wonderful report on “Study on the Construction Technology of Ecological Waterway in the Three Gorges Fluctuating Backwater Area”. She represented Professor Yang Shengfa share the achievements of the research team: based on the habitat characteristics and hydrodynamic characteristics of the three Gorges fluctuating backwater area, the team studied the swimming ability of fish under the stress of critical, and found that hydrodynamic factors were the main factors affecting the spatial distribution of fish in the three Gorges fluctuating backwater area. Reef blasting and dredging had little effect on fish habitat, while dam construction had a certain effect on fish habitat. 

Zhang Mingjin, a researcher of Tianjin Research Institute For Water Transport Engineering,M.O.T., made a wonderful report on “Understanding and Thinking of the Development Outline of Inland Waterway Navigation”.

He introduced the outline of the national strategy for the development of the industry and explained the related issues of the development of inland river shipping around the eight tasks including building an inland waterway system connecting the main and branch rivers with the sea, building modern ports with intensive, efficient and coordinated functions, building an economic, efficient, connected and integrated shipping service system, and practicing a resource-saving and environment-friendly mode of green development, etc.

Professor Liu Chao from Sichuan University gave a wonderful report on “Study on River Water and Sand Dynamics and Beach trough Evolution under vegetation Effect”. In order to solve the problem that the traditional water and sediment prediction methods often have obvious deviation in predicting river channels with vegetation, Professor Liu Chao has designed a unified prediction method of sediment transport rate of bed load under complex vegetation distribution, carried out predictions of sedimentation under the true form of vegetation, established the parameter expression of secondary circulation in straight floodplain channel under the effect of vegetation, and put forward the calculation method of secondary circulation along the river

Li Ming, senior engineer of Yangtze River Waterway Survey and Design Institute (Wuhan) Co., LTD., gave a wonderful report on "Engineering practice of Yangtze River Ecological Waterway Construction". Li Ming high Engineering analyzed the feasibility of ecological waterway construction and explained the three-dimensional restoration of water bank, conservation and restoration of river ecological area, and green construction technology. In addition,

he looked forward to the transformation from reducing ecological impacts to improving ecological functions, the establishment of a normalized ecological waterway monitoring and standard system, and the in-depth research on the development and application of new technologies for ecological waterway construction.

At the end of the conference, Professor Liang Yue, vice president of the College of River and Ocean Engineering of Chongqing Jiaotong University, made a summary and thanked the experts who had shared their knowledge of water transportation, ecology and technology. “These precious spiritual wealth had an important inspiration for all our teachers and students in theory and practice. Happy 70th birthday to Chongqing Jiaotong University!” The academic annual meeting not only provided a valuable research methods and experimental technology and some new ideas and new direction in terms of ecological protection and shipping development, but also and provides an academic exchange platform for teachers and students in our school and the domestic and international peers, enriching our knowledge and expand our horizons, bringing the charm of academic collisions with science and technology, the meeting get a happy ending.
